Elementary Spanish II
Span 202 is a continuation of Span 201. It is an expansion of fundamental notions and a presentation of more elaborate structures such as hypothesizing about present and past situations, learning compound tenses, and using a variety of modes and ‘si’ clauses. Throughout the semester, students will expand their written and oral communication skills with personalized context-specific topics such as the use of technology in our contemporary society; discuss job searches and finances; film and entertainment; urban vs. rural lifestyles. This course will include cultural readings, audio and short films to broaden students’ understanding of intercultural knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world.

The sequence of Spanish language courses SPAN 101/102, 201/202, 301/302 is designed for non native speakers.
The Department of FHIS reserves the right to refuse enrollment to any of its language courses to a student who has, in the view of the Department, a level of competence unsuited to that course. Enrollment at or below the level the student has already attained is not permitted.
Spanish 202 is the continuation of Spanish 201. The course proceeds with the introduction of language structures of increased complexity while requiring learners to engage in interactive communication. This course includes group interaction and the discussion (oral and written) of selected readings. A film will be shown in class.
Evaluation is based on demonstrated proficiency in the use of pertinent vocabulary and structures by means of self-expression (oral and written) and functional translation. The course also attempts to promote cultural awareness. Classes are conducted in Spanish.
Spanish 202 is a 3-credit course. It consists of 3 hours a week of scheduled class time and another unscheduled hour a week for Web or other writing tasks, for a total of about 48 programmed course hours.

Students with Grade 12 Spanish are normally not given credits for this course; exceptions are possible, but they must be requested and formally approved by the course coordinator at the beginning of each session.
After Spanish 202 students may take Spanish 206 (conversation oriented) and/or Spanish 301 (composition oriented). Students may take both in the order of their choice. Both Spanish 206 and Spanish 301 may in turn be continued with Spanish 207 and Spanish 302 respectively.
